A Boon or a Bane?

To contain the spread of COVID-19, the Singapore Government has recently implemented “Circuit Breaker’ measures, mandating that all employers must allow their employees —excluding those who are working in essential services— to work from home. Understandably, some companies may face the difficulties in managing their workforce from home due to the lack of experience in managing a remote team. As such, we would like to share with you some tips on how to better manage your workforce that is working remotely amidst the current situation.

Trust is often the bedrock of many business proceedings. As important as it is for one to have trust in the company, it is equally important for the company to trust its employees. Have faith that your employees have the responsibility to complete their relevant tasks without supervision.

Embracing Change

As much as you would prefer your workforce to be working in the office due to personal reasons, the fact of the matter is that you do not have a choice. That being said, it is up to you to see the silver lining. Successful people embrace change; defeatists fear them.

Technology as an Enabler

With a scattered workforce, it is imperative that you and your employees know how to leverage telecommunication platforms such as Zoom to maintain a touch-point and stay connected with each other. Technology allows you to continue operating your business without hiccups. By using platforms such as Trello, you can also easily keep track of your employees’ key performance indicator (KPI) and ensure that they are staying on task.

Find Out How Your Employees are Managing

As your employees work from home, there may be issues that they are facing due to the new arrangement. As an employer, it is important that you conduct periodic surveys to find out how the ground is feeling about the new arrangement and how to make the experience better for them. Perhaps what is equally important is that you and your employees can consider upskilling during the current downtime to better prepare yourselves for future challenges.

Find Ways to Reward Your Employees

Positive reinforcement goes a long way. To keep your workforce motivated and loyal to the company, rewarding employees for displaying responsibility and the right values is more important than ever. Your employees are the foundation of your company. Recognizing them makes them feel appreciated and drives them to do better for the company.

Should I Be Worried?

More often than not, people often myopically only see the negatives of the new and unfamiliar. While working from home may lead to a decrease in productivity due to distractions, it has its upsides too: for example, it cuts down on travelling time which gives your employees more time to work on their relevant tasks. Productivity may also increase because your employees are working in a familiar and relaxed environment.

Working from home may be a novel concept for many companies. But amid the uncertainties that may come with managing a remote workforce, the value and benefits that it brings should not be disregarded.
